Kwik Kian Gie Profile

 

Kwik Kian Gie (KKG) was born in 1935 in Juwana, Pati regency, Central Java. After completing his high school education, KKG continued his studies at the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia for a year to the level of preparation. Then, in 1956, he studied at Hogeschool Rotterdam Nederlandsche Economiche which is now named Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, and graduated in 1963. Many graduates from this university become Indonesia economists and have high position in national politics. Including the former Vice President Mohammad Hatta, and several former ministers like Sumitro Djojohadikusomo, Prawiro and Arifin Siregar. 


In 1963-1964 KKG worked as Assistant Cultural Attaché and Lighting of the Embassy in Den Haag. A year later he became the Director of the Nederlands-Indonesische Goederen Associatie (1964-1965), which broke up before the operation. Five years later he became The Director of NV HANDELSONDERNEMING "IPILO Amsterdam".


In 1970 KKG was back to his homeland. For a year he was unemployed. In 1971 he went into business. Together with Ferry Sonneville and Dr. Indra Hattari along with other comrades, he established PT Indonesian Financing & Investment Company. The company is a non-bank financial institution which was first established in Indonesia. At that time, the company was established without permission because the government did not have rules about this kind of business organization.

After that he was involved in the establishment and management of various companies. In doing the business he was always together with his colleagues. The companies are PT Altrón Panorama Electronic, Dharma PT Jasa Utama, PT Cloves Zanzibar, and PT ABN Amro Finance.

Since attending high school, he had already known what he wanted in life. In an interview with one of the mass media, KKG said that since in high school he felt that his presence in the world would be meaningful if he gives meaning for many people. The Concrete embodiment is that he was able to take part in the administration of the country as well as in education. In 1954 he founded the school grants in Surabaya, and he became a Grade 3 student who graduated high school in 1955. In 1968 KKG became Trisakti Foundation board member until now. In 1982, together with Prof.. Panglaykim he founded the first MBA school in Indonesia, namely the Institute of Management Prasetiya. Then, in 1987, KKG with Djoenaedi Joesoef and Kaharuddin Ongko established Indonesian Business Institute (IBI) which has now been named the Institute of Business and Information Technology Kwik Kian Gie (Kwik Kian Gie School of Business).

Back in the homeland, he cultivated the business, while writing in the mass media about the economy and politics. In 1987 he joined the Indonesian Democratic Party. In the same year he represented as a member of the Governing Body PDI MPR. When Megawati Sukarnoputri became the chairman of the Democratic Party she changed KKG position to be concurrently Chairman of Research and Development.

As PDI-P cadres, KKG was the Vice Chairman of the Constitutional Committee, EKUIN Minister, Member of Commission IX of the House of Representatives and the Minister for National Development Planning / Head of Bappenas. For all his work, KKG got Adipradana Mahaputra Star awarded by RI.

Since 1980 KKG is very active in writing in the mass media, providing exposure to a variety of seminars and talk shows on television.
